A stronger password is only the beginning

Two practical habits that give your online accounts another layer of protection.

A password is one part of protecting an online account. Two-factor authentication adds another check, making it harder for someone with your password to sign in.

Turn on a second factor

Open your account settings and look for two-factor authentication, two-step verification, or multi-factor authentication. Follow the service’s setup instructions. The Federal Trade Commission identifies an authenticator app or a security key as more secure options for that extra check.

Keep your software updated

Updates often include patches for security threats. Install them promptly on your phone, tablet, and computer. Automatic updates can help you keep up without checking every app individually.

Start with an account you use often

Take a few minutes to review its sign-in settings and your device’s update settings. These are manageable steps that make account protection part of your regular routine.
